Relieving Children's Bedtime Anxiety

One of the loneliest places in the world for a child can be in their bed. Fear of the dark, anxiety, and fear of sleeping alone are just some causes of night-time anxiety in children. Facing this every night seems like an endless scary cycle. Screentime before bed can add to these anxieties.

"Hours of television time has been linked with poor sleep quantity and quality as well. A study of children ages 4 to 11 found that increased screen time was associated with increased sleep anxiety, increased night waking, and increased total sleep disturbance."

Sleep disorders are common at some point in a child's life by providing ways to disconnect and enrich their minds they can overcome their sleep-related anxiety. Having a very soft glow of light could provide a sense of comfort to the child.

I began to sketch ideas my initial sketches I focused on creating a light that would interact with the child one way or another. From researching some observations I wanted to implement into my design were :

1. Interactive toys spark imagination in children and make them more interested in a game/ toy. They also help them utilize tools and hands during play.

2. Easy for kids to understand, no sharp or small parts. (No parental supervision need)

3. Limiting screen time before bed and substituting it with learning activities can help improve sleeping patterns.

Towards the end, I leaned more into modular lights that would allow the child to build according to their skill level and preferences. I also created a modular base that could be expanded to build larger structures

Having a playful nightlight allows kids to look forward to their bedtime, slowly getting rid of their nighttime anxiety while enriching their brains.
