Providing Healthy and Specialized Solutions for the Food Insecure

When thinking about hungry people with little food resources, for many, their first thought might be the people in third-world countries, when in reality, someone might be experiencing that a few miles away, or it might even be their next-door neighbor.

Coming from a low-income community, I've seen how food insecurity has affected many around me.

Approximately 1 in 8 households equaling 37          million Americans, don't have enough to eat.

Research has shown that the most susceptible to food insecurity are Hispanic, Black, and low-income families. It is common for communities where these groups live to be "food deserts," regions where people have limited access to healthful and affordable food. This may be due to having a low income or traveling farther to find healthy food options, making it more challenging to resolve.

Many have no other option than to turn to fast food as an easy way to quickly access food at a low cost for their families. However, these foods high in fat and cholesterol have adverse effects that can pile up later on in their lives. Mental and physical health is greatly affected due to a lack of nutrition. All age groups suffer from this, with children and teens most affected. Their education is one of the most affected areas because they get in their way of learning and may cause them to be behind or lose interest in school.

GIVN- USER FLOW.png

The goal was to create an app that helps users find their nearest food pantry and provide easy meal options from limited food items, such as those offered at food banks. I took a look at other apps/websites that offered similar services and found that most did not provide full service; where to pick up food baskets to cooking a meal, it was one or the other. Additionally, I wanted to give a form of community interaction so that the users would not feel isolated in their experiences. This interaction would also be helpful by establishing rapport with the services provided.

I created this user flow to demonstrate how users might navigate the app and its different pages. It allowed me to figure out what pages I needed to show to complete specific tasks such as: finding the nearest food bank, where to donate, and possible recipes from limited items. After that, I moved on to creating wireframes.
